Stop Complaining and Get Creative
One of the issues that has arisen from the global shutdown and pandemic are disruptions in supply lines. This is unlikely to change any time soon. Band programs are having problems getting band shoes. Companies that print digital flags can’t get the fabric they need to do the printing. The list goes on and on.
This is frustrating for all of us who want to put a perfect show out into the world for everyone to see. But our activity has always been about “making it work.” (Thank you Tim Gunn!)
In my almost 30 years as a full time show arranger and designer, I have never written a show for a band that did not have some problem or deficiency to address. One section of the band would be weaker one year, or costumes did not come out exactly as planned. Weather has disrupted rehearsals or a bus has broken down. Our activity is full of things that don’t go right. And we always find a way to have a great performance and thrill audiences anyway.
If the issues in our world bring you lemons, make that lemonade. I have written shows for 12 wind players that were effective and fun and watch. I’ve created exciting shows using only costumes and flags that were in the guard closet. I’ve arranged for bands with 24 flutes and 2 trumpets. We can make anything work!
So roll up your sleeves and don’t waste time grousing. Spend your time and energy making it work. Get creative and find solutions. Your students deserve this.
