Organize Your Butterflies

We recently had a stellar webinar with Tom Hooten, the Principal Trumpet in the LA Philharmonic!  Tom’s a big-time musical celebrity who Daniel Morrison called “The Lebron James of the Trumpet World.”  Trust me: Take an hour to be inspired by watching the webinar!

Daniel did a great job talking with Tom about how he takes high pressure musical situations and turns them into grand and exciting adventures!  At one point Tom talks about getting nervous before a performance:

There’s no shame in being nervous… My mother would say it like this: “You’re gonna get the butterflies, right?  We’ve all heard ‘the butterflies in your tummy.'”  She would say, “You just have to get them to fly in formation.”

This is genius, and so easy to understand.  We all get nervous because we care!  We want to do a good job, and that’s a good thing.  But putting those nerves in perspective, into the right context, is a skill that we all can learn.  And that’s what Tom talks about in this amazing webinar.

I encourage you to check out Tom’s inspiring and helpful conversation with Daniel Morrison, and then when you feel those butterflies, you’ll know what to do.  This takes the edge off, lightens your load, and allows you to move forward having fun with your task rather than being weighed down by the pressure.
