Another Trip to Lowes
Yesterday I made three trips to Lowes and two to Home Depot. We’re in the middle of a home renovation after having moved into our new home a few weeks ago. MY job is to make sure the workers have everything that they need, when they need it. So if the renovation team asks for something so they can do their work that day, I jump in the car and drive to Lowes. Luckily, we live very near to our local home improvement store, and I’ve become something of a regular.
There are many parallels to our marching activity in this current scenario. Directors, managers, program coordinators, team leaders: we are all keeping things moving and improving. One of our more important jobs is to make sure that everyone on the team has what they need at all times. From the band parent fitting uniforms or building set pieces, to the instructor standing in front of the students, do they have the tools they need to be effective and efficient at all times?
This is a big task, and requires a lot of diligence and attention. But every moment of practice time is precious, and every hour given by anyone to our program must be used smartly. Stay organized, and have your entire team work together to make this happen. Make sure that boombox is charged and ready, the field is lined, the supplies are there for the guard, or that the drumline has those extra drumheads. Take the time to set up this infrastructure. This is how the great programs make the most of the time they have.
