Walking Into A Room

I want to be the type of person that when I walk into a room, everyone is glad to see me.  And when I have to leave, they are sorry to see me go.

This means being kind, friendly, and cooperative, as well as hard-working, trustworthy, and resilient.

I recently recorded a podcast with Clif Walker, a percussion composer and arranger who I’ve known for almost 25 years.  Clif and I have likely written over 100 shows together, and I’ve loved watching his career soar.  He is currently working with Carolina Crown.

When Clif was discussing the secret to his long successful career, he mentioned what a “small band world it is.”  Everyone pretty much knows everyone else, and someone you worked with 20 years ago could resurface in an unexpected way or place.

So never burn bridges, and be the type of person that people are happy to see walk into a room!

I’d also recommend that you learn to enter a room with confidence and poise.  Walk with authority, stand up straight, and have good posture.  First impressions are lasting, and you want to command the space and show your confidence, all while being friendly and open.  Don’t bully or intimidate, but bring your expertise and own what you know.

Those rules that your mom or grandmom taught you were absolutely correct!  I hope you’ll remember this the next time you walk into a room.
