A Light in the Darkness
Throughout history, in the midst of every kind of war, disease, chaos, and hardship, there have been people who made it through okay. These smart humans did not die of diseases, or succumb to the madness of their times. If this were not true, the human race would have ended long ago.
In the face of cruelty, meanness, pettiness, and vengeance, it is possible to still be kind, hopeful, and productive. And definitely resilient!
There is a way to move through any dark time and still be a kind person. It’s possible to do good work, interact with openness, and help others. You can be a good person even when those around you do not seem to be acting the same.
I encourage you to find good work to do and then set up your life to make it happen. I encourage you to look to the helpers, for as Mr. Rogers famously reminded us, in the midst of every kind of tragedy there are good people helping. Send these helpers your support in any way you can, and know that your dollars allow their good work to flourish and matter.
Take time for self-care, get adequate rest and exercise, eat healthy foods, and read inspiring books. Surround yourself with people who build you up and support your goals, and take time to be with your special someone whenever possible.
It’s possible to be strong and show grit no matter how much cruelty or chaos is going on all around you. Lean in on kindness, find the best in all those you encounter, and do what you can for those who are fighting the battles for truth and progress.
I suspect you may currently have friends who need a hug, need to talk, or maybe need a shoulder to cry on. You also have friends who are helpers, who are working to make a difference. They need your support, and perhaps your money. Be a light in the darkness to these friends. Every bit of light you add to the world makes a difference. Each small act of kindness really matters.
At our bed and breakfast, the Phantom History House, we have a 12 foot skeleton named Eugene who stands next to our front door. Eugene is holding a lantern, and each night this lantern shines brightly, guiding guests and friends to our comfortable B&B. Eugene is the gatekeeper for our safe space, a space where everyone is welcome to be themselves without judgement and can turn off the world for a time and find quiet and comfort. We hope you’ll come visit and stay with us when you need to rest, refresh, and renew. Read a book in our library, relax on our quiet back deck, and snuggle in our comfortable and unique guest rooms. Take care of yourself. We are doing our best to provide what we can for all who follow Eugene’s lantern to our door. Welcome!
