Is it kind? Is it loving?

As we head into the “Season to be Jolly,” many of us may need some fresh ideas and concepts to help us get through this time with our peace and balance.  We can be challenged.

In the midst of every kind of cruelty and darkness and difficulty there have always been people who moved through the time and were ok.  There have always been those who kept the light shining, and brought that light to the world in dark times.

Every bit of light that we bring to the world makes a difference.  Rather than despair about the world, focus on bringing your light to it.  I have adopted a mantra to take me through this time.  “Is it kind?  Is it loving?”  I keep this in mind as I travel the world and interact with my fellow man.  I try to be one to bring light and kindness.  I truly believe this matters.  It can be a contribution to the season and the world at large.

I use these words to evaluate my own actions, plus what is going on around me.  How are our leaders and our fellow citizens acting?  Is it kind? Is it loving?  By their actions we shall know.

As we seek to bring the light, I encourage you to focus on what you can do right where you are in your own sphere of the world.  Bring kindness to each engagement you have, to each place you go.

Many of us will be spending time with family soon and this can challenge our ability to be kind and bring light.  But remember in the midst of any situation you can be a bringer of light.  “Is it loving?”

If  you’re with your family and someone says something which sets you off, before you make that retort…ask yourself: “Is what I’m about to say kind? Is it loving?”  If it’s not, just let it go.  You’re not going to change anyone’s opinion over Christmas dinner.

Idea: I encourage you to have some great “subject changers” in your pocket for these moments.  Here’s a suggestion: “What about that College Football Playoff?”  I guarantee that will get spirits up in a new direction.  Or “What’s YOUR favorite Christmas TV special?”  And in the most dire situations, “Isn’t fruitcake delicious?!”

This is guaranteed to change the course of a conversation!  If you find yourself challenged, find a way to take a break.  Take care of yourself, and take time to breathe and be still.  Think of the question “Is it kind? Is it loving?” and then step back into the world with your light shining.
