As we launch into a new season, there is a danger in focusing on the wrong thing. Often directors and their staff lament all the shortcomings of their program. If you find yourself thinking this way, I encourage you to make an important shift

If you're one of those people who feels damaged because you have failed, you need to learn something new.  Everyone has failures, disappointments, and hurts in their life.  What matters is what happens next.

If you're one of those long-time drum corps fans who struggles with what current shows look and sound like, I encourage you to focus on the members. And I encourage you to do what I did: visit a drum corps rehearsal.

Many people love ghost stories, scary movies, and tales of the paranormal.  It can be fun to be scared, and fun to imagine that a spirit is watching us as we tour an old mansion.  And most everyone loves Halloween!

Imagine living with no smart phone, no computer, no email, and no car. I encountered someone living this life today and they were in great distress. I found myself full of empathy for this person trying to make their way in a world that requires these things.

At one point in my life I was very critical of marching productions, always seeing the flaws and poor design choices. But as I've gotten more experience, and especially as I've had 11 years of podcast and webinar conversations, I've learned to look at it all differently.

We all have experiences where a misunderstanding caused hardship from a misunderstood text.

First and foremost, we are a musical activity.  Band directors study music education to teach music and build musicians.  I want to remind everyone to trust their music and put it first.

To do better work we all need to take time to play also.
