Gus is my best buddy, a 7 1/2 year old Bichon / Poodle mix who’s a great cuddler and enthusiastic eater.

As we enter the holiday season it can be hard to eat smart and not put on a few pounds.  The world is full of treats and cookies, cakes and pies, and everyone seems to be forcing us to eat all the time.

So here are some thoughts on eating that I learned from Gus:  When you eat, eat enthusiastically.  And when you’re full, stop.

It is conventional knowledge that dogs will eat and eat as long as food is available, but I have not found this to be true with my animal companions.  No matter how much food is put into Gus’ bowl, he’ll eat enthusiastically and then when he’s had enough, he will just stop.

This is a great lesson for all of us.  Pay attention to what you are eating, and when you feel full, stop.  Don’t let Mom’s childhood entreaties to “clear your plate” coerce you into eating more than you want or need.  The starving children in Africa can do without your remaining scraps.

Many fitness gurus suggest that you start with smaller portions, or better yet…use a smaller plate.  Fill up a salad plate and then when you clear that small plate, allow yourself seconds…if you still want them!

We should all be eating 5 or 6 small meals each day, so unless it’s a special Christmas dinner, make each “feeding” smaller and have more smart snacks throughout the day.  Then you’ll sail through the holiday season feeling light instead of bloated, and when January arrives you’ll be your same trim self, ready to take on the new year.

So take some advice from Gus and when you’ve had enough, just stop and go out and play!
