About Tim Hinton
Tim Hinton is “The Beast of the Marching Arts.” He has spent his life helping those in the marching arts to have a more fulfilling and successful experience. His passion is to facilitate getting the information people need to find more joy and success in their work.
Tim is an Tampa-based composer and arranger who has been creating marching shows for almost 40 years. He serves as a consultant and designer for groups all over the country and cherishes the ability to help any group have a better season and be more interesting and entertaining.
He was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1960. Tim began playing the piano in 2nd grade and joined the band in 4th grade playing the french horn. Because of the inspiration of many excellent music teachers and band directors, he decided to become a band director himself. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and his Masters from Georgia State University.
During college Tim had the privilege of marching with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, Illinois for three summers (1980-82). He also taught marching with the corps during the 1983 season, learning many tricks of drill writing and cleaning that still serve him well as a consultant. Tim is especially proud to have won the DCI Individual and Ensemble Competition on french horn in 1982, being the first person in DCI history to receive a perfect score of 100 in individual competition.
Tim taught in the public schools for 10 years and developed a highly successful program at Dunwoody High School in Dunwoody, Georgia. While there his bands consistently received superior ratings in concert and marching performances and he is proud to have introduced his students to a great variety of quality music. Though he was working with a small band, Tim’s marching productions at Dunwoody were heralded for their creativity and originality and he firmly believes that any band can have an effective show under any circumstances.
Tim is the host of the Marching Roundtable podcast and the creator of Marching Arts Education. He shares his passion of the marching arts by providing information to help everyone be more successful and enjoy their work more.
