Stamina
I am going to be appearing on live broadcasts on BOX5-TV on 12 of the next 15 days. I have gotten to an age where I have to consciously stop and rest to take care of myself. This marathon will be exciting but also exhausting, so I plan to take it easy between broadcast appearances as much as possible.
This can be frustrating because I want to take advantage of this moment for my business at Marching Arts Education and get as much out of this as possible. I want to produce the most interesting stories and present great interviews as part of the broadcast team. You can find the work our team has been doing on the BOA Today podcast, on Marching Arts NOW!, and on our Marching Roundtable YouTube Channel.
Early in my career when I was a band director I used to get a cold at the end of each marching season. I would run myself ragged and then finally collapse when the season was over. I was really proud when I stopped this pattern and learned to take care of myself so that this no longer happened each year.
During this season as we’ve been creating content for the broadcasts on BOX5-TV I’ve been getting up at 4 or 5am and often working 15 or 16 hour days. I am smart enough to start to recognize when I’m getting run down and will force myself to stop and rest. This is typical of many in our activity during the thick of the season, and I write this to remind you that there is no virtue in getting sick as you run this race. Taking care of yourself is paramount so that you can be there for your students and clients and do your best work.
For my part, I stop to bake, stop to read, and take naps. I go to bed early and practice my martial arts most days. Keeping moving and taking time to step away from the work has allowed me to keep going and get the work done. It’s been a struggle, and if you see me looking tired on a live broadcast appearance, I ask for your empathy and kindness, just as I would ask you to give to every performer and instructor out there working their hardest.
Now it’s time to make some brownies!
